Russell Young: Between icons and contemporary myths

British-American artist Russell Young (born 1959, Yorkshire) is internationally recognized for his monumental screen prints that transform iconic images from contemporary culture into powerful works of art. As a leading figure in contemporary art, Russell Young explores the intersection of celebrity, media and modern mythology through painting, screen printing, sculpture and installation.

From photography to contemporary art

Raised in challenging circumstances in northern England, Russell Young discovered the emotional impact of imagery at an early age. He studied photography, film and graphic design, laying the foundation for his later artistic career.

After moving to London, he gained recognition as a photographer within the emerging music scene. Russell Young captured early performances by influential bands such as Bauhaus, R.E.M. and The Smiths, and photographed major cultural figures including Morrissey, Björk, Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan. He also created the iconic cover for George Michael’s Faith, further establishing his reputation in visual culture.

This early immersion in music and celebrity imagery continues to influence his work as a contemporary artist.

Iconic imagery and cultural influence

In the late 1990s, Russell Young relocated to New York, where he fully transitioned into the world of contemporary art. He gained international recognition with his Pig Portraits series (2001), in which mugshots of cultural icons such as Elvis Presley and Sid Vicious are reimagined as bold, large-scale screen prints.

Throughout his career, Russell Young has been drawn to iconic figures who have shaped popular culture and collective imagination. Among them is Brigitte Bardot, a timeless symbol of femininity, freedom and cinematic influence, whose image continues to inspire artists across generations.

Signature technique and contemporary relevance

A defining element of Russell Young’s work is his signature diamond dust technique. By incorporating finely ground glass crystals into his screen prints, he creates a distinctive shimmering surface that enhances both the glamour and intensity of his subjects.

His work reflects on fame, power and identity, turning familiar faces into contemporary myths and reinforcing his position within contemporary art.

International recognition

Russell Young lives and works in the United States. His work is exhibited internationally, auctioned by major houses such as Sotheby’s and Christie’s, and held in numerous private and museum collections.
