BUFFET Bernard

Biography

Bernard Buffet (1928-1999) was one of the leading figures of post-war French figurative painting. A child prodigy, he rose to prominence at an early age and became a key representative of the anti-abstract movement L’Homme-Témoin.

Style

His work is instantly recognizable for its sharp lines, dark contours, and restrained palette. Through landscapes, still lifes, and urban scenes, Buffet captured the mood and tensions of the post-war era.

Saint-Tropez

Deeply attached to Saint-Tropez, Buffet regularly spent time there with his wife Annabel. The town’s light, historic streets, and Mediterranean atmosphere inspired several important series of paintings.

Legacy

Despite shifting artistic trends, Buffet remained faithful to his distinctive vision. Today, his work enjoys renewed international acclaim and remains among the most recognizable in twentieth-century art.
