Philippe Geluck: Le Chat CONTINUAL EXHIBITION

About the exhibition:

PHILIPPE GELUCK: La Cave du Chat

Painter, sculptor, writer, humorist, and cartoonist, Philippe Geluck embodies versatility in the world of art. Best known for his creation, Le Chat, Geluck’s comic strip has become a bestseller, offering a humorous take on the absurdity of life.

Le Chat, conceived as a lighthearted addition to Geluck’s wedding announcement, made its debut in Le Soir on March 22, 1983. Drawing inspiration from the ligne claire tradition, Geluck’s cat humorously challenges authority and mocks the world at large. His art is a personal synthesis of Reiser’s sharp brilliance, Folon’s poetic darkness, and the biting irony characteristic of Chaval.

Born in 1954, Geluck is an artist who approaches his craft with a playful spirit. He sees himself as a jester, dedicated to the realm of popular art. Through his humorous acrobatics, Geluck aims to shift our perspectives on life and provoke thought. While his drawings evoke laughter, they also encourage introspection.

In his paintings, Geluck invites us to contemplate modern art. Whether he’s reimagining Gustave Courbet’s L’Origine du monde, playfully stereotyping Roy Lichtenstein’s pop art, questioning Jackson Pollock’s abstract expressionism, or satirizing Lucio Fontana’s spatialism, Geluck always maintains a half-smile. His works pay witty tribute to contemporary art masters, challenging conventions with both affection and admiration.

Beyond the pages of comic strips and canvases, Geluck’s Chat transcends into sculptures such as a “Chaltérophile” or “Discobole.” Explore the multifaceted world of Philippe Geluck and experience the delightful fusion of humor, artistry, and wit that defines his creations.
