MANGAUD Sylvie

Sylvie Mangaud was born in Paris in 1961, where she currently lives and works. Her artistic path has evolved at the crossroads of several disciplines and is defined by a sustained and attentive observation of the human body and its expressive power.

Initially trained as a photographer, she developed a keen sense of composition, form and structure, while learning to capture movement, emotion and fleeting moments. This sensitivity to the right moment remains central to her artistic approach. Alongside her photographic practice, she pursued studies in drawing and sculpture, as well as graphology and morphology, disciplines that provided her with a deep understanding of body language and the subtle relationship between form and expression.

Over time, photography no longer sufficed to express the bodily gestures she envisioned. In the 1990s, she naturally turned to sculpture. Her photographic background enabled her to translate movement, dynamism and emotion into sculptural forms in which the body appears to breathe and remain in motion.

The nude body and animals are her primary sources of inspiration. Her work is distinguished by deliberately elongated proportions, lending her sculptures a slender, airy and sensual presence. Although highly stylized, her figures always retain the accuracy and strength of movement. The purity of line and the softness of volume create a harmony that is both powerful and refined.

The anonymity of her figures is striking: faces remain smooth and devoid of individual features. By eliminating personal characteristics, Mangaud elevates her sculptures to the level of universal archetypes. These are not portraits, but reflections of the human condition and of movement itself. At times poised as if ready to leap or reach toward another, at other moments serene and restrained, her figures consistently balance introspection and expressiveness.

Sylvie Mangaud’s work is authentic and immediately recognizable. Her sculptures are held in numerous private and institutional collections worldwide.
